Activity description

Enjoy a 4x4 excursion led by expert local guides through the public areas of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park with the goal of observing the bearded vulture.

During the tour, your guide will explain the characteristics of their habitat, as well as aspects of their biology and behavior, and you will follow specific routes and wait at common observation sites.

You'll also learn about the operation of the Andalusian Scavenger Bird Recovery and Conservation Plan, which brought the bearded vulture back to the skies of Andalusia after its extinction in 1988.

In 2004, a reintroduction project began in these mountains, releasing up to 96 individuals equipped with GPS transmitters. Around 50 of these individuals remain alive, and nine breeding centers have been established. In 2025, a historic event will occur following the extinction of the bearded vulture in these mountains: Esperanza, the first female bearded vulture born in the wild since its extinction in the 1980s, has successfully reproduced in these mountains.

The activity takes place in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, in the province of Jaén. The itinerary and waiting areas will depend on the latest sightings and other species you wish to observe during the day.

During the tour, it is also possible to observe some species of mammals and birds, as well as reptiles and amphibians depending on the time of year.
